The son of a wealthy White Bridge merchant, Corwin grew up without wanting a thing. Until, that is, the day that his father went north to Saldea to buy ice peppers and never came home. He was left taking care of his frail mother and three younger sisters Ennella, Crysany and Dellara until the eldest, Ennella was able to take over the family business. That year he traveled north to Saldea to find news of his father. After some searching he met a merchant by the name of Cailean Voere who had fought next to his father in a trolloc raid that had come late one spring. Through Cailean, he learned the news of his father’s death. Disturbed, Corwin would have returned home if not for Cailean’s eldest daughter, a girl three years his junior by the name of Elmorra. Soon he and Elmorra knew that they were in love. Corwin stayed in Saldea training with their warriors, where he earned his first warhorse, a stallion who Elmorra named Spark.
Fortune did not shine brightly on Corwin and Elmorra for long though, shortly before they were to be married, darkfriends invaded Elmorra’s village while Corwin was out on a raid in the Blight, killing all of its residents. By the time that Corwin returned, all that had survived were a few animals, and an infant. Since then, Corwin has wandered the Westlands looking for signs of darkfriend and ruining many a well-orchestrated plan. Still, he was surprised to learn that many of the darkfriend believed that the dragon had been reborn, and that the last battle was coming. He knew that it must be his task to assist the dragon in any way that he could, and so he formed a party of darkfriend hunters, all young men and women who had potential but were not set in their ways. This way Corwin could train them, hone all of their skills, make them into the most dangerous and cunning hunters that they could possible be. One he found in the borderlands, a renowned Shadowspawn killer already at the age of eighteen, another an Ebou Dari noble with knowledge and cunning, a third a young woodsman who could track a shadow across the lands, the fourth a seasoned warrior he seemed afraid of nothing. Although he had not planned on it, he was more than pleased when an entertainer joined the party as well, as people in inns often talk when they think that everybody is too drunk to listen. He had, at last, a great weapon.
What Corwin was not prepared for was the depth of feeling that he would have for these young men and woman that he brought together. For Caile it was almost a father’s love, because if Caile had been a year younger, he could have been perhaps the son of Corwin and Elmorra; in Tieros he felt a kinship due to his own borderlander training, in Ryall he saw a reflection of his own anger as a young adult who had lost his father, with Gareth he saw the kind of person he had always liked to have as a friend. It was Palea though, that surprised Corwin the most. Their love was young, sweet, and so different from that which he had shared with Elmorra ten years earlier. Still, he cherished it, because, what else is there to do?
